Last Travel Fling Before Wedding Bells Ring: Cliff House Resort & Spa, Maine

The Cliff House Resort & Spa was one of the suggestions for my bachelorette trip. Here’s the scoop:

* Who: Gals who want to enjoy New England’s great outdoors, biking, swimming and quaint villages while knowing a mani/pedi is just minutes away.

* What: A classic New England Seaside retreat with pampering amenities, luxe spa treatments, eco-friendly practices and fabulous oceanfront dining. Opened in 1872, the resort features 194 guest rooms each with an oceanview balcony.

* When: Ideal for summer or fall. During July and August, the resort offers complimentary trolley service to Perkins Cove, downtown Ogunquit and Ogunquit beach.

* Where: Located on the south coast of Maine, just an hour from Boston, its a great option for a road-tripping girl’s getaway.

* Don’t Miss: Spa lovers will be in heaven! The oceanfront, adults-only spa building contains a full-service spa, 75-foot lap pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room, fitness center, spa boutique and 32 oversized guest rooms. Local ingredients are incorporated into spa services such as the Maine Blueberry Body Wrap and the Maine Blueberry Manicure and Pedicure. Other body treatments, facials and massages sound great too including the Cliff House Seashell Massage (uses warm seashells to balance your energy, improve circulation and boost lymphatic drainage) and the Wild Lime Blossom Scalp Massage.

* Booking: The resort offers a variety of year-round packages. My favorites are the 3-night Seaside Shopper and Spa Sampler programs or the 2-night Spa & Coastal Shopper. Pricing varies by season and mini-suites are available too (extra $50 per night) for an even more luxe getaway.

Favorite Posts: Got Milk?? Try this Moroccan Wedding Tradition…

If you’re looking to incorporate an ancient Moroccan custom into your wedding preparation, you’re going to love this spa treatment idea:

Moroccan weddings are very elaborate (some last seven days) so to prepare for the festivities, Moroccan brides enjoy a luxuriating milk bath to purify themselves and relax before the ceremony. This is followed-up with a beberiska ceremony in which the bride’s hands and feet are painted with henna.

If you don’t feel like making your own milk bath, try this Plus Buttermilk Bath Soak from H20 Plus or Skin Milk Foaming Bath at drugstores nationwide.

Stressed out by Wedding Planning? Try a Weekend at the Absolutely Stunning Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach

Globetrotting Cindy just got back from the The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach which reopened following a whopping $120-million renovation. If you’re looking for distressing ocean views and the best pools in Palm Beach, there is nowhere better to spend a long weekend.

Take your choice of spacious guestrooms, luxurious suites or their famous Presidential Suite. For dining, the Terrace restaurant (the only oceanfront terrace dinning in Palm Beach) features a fire pit that is ceremoniously lit each evening – perfect for torching S’Mores.

The highlight of the property has to be their new $30-million Eau Spa, which opened in March 2009. The 42,000-square-foot haven is unlike any spa I have ever seen, and is the grand finale of the resort’s four-year transformation project. For a private day, a spa day with the girls, or a romantic retreat with your man, visit one of the 19 treatment rooms, most with private gardens. You’ll find an open air garden with hanging chairs suspended above a reflection pond, the first of its kind “scrub and polish bar” where guests can mix up their own scrubs and polishes with the help of an on-site mixologist, a bath lounge, three couples spa villas with oversized tubs and outdoor rain showers, and a fitness center offering yoga and spin classes.

Destination Spa Getaway – Riviera Maya, Mexico

Continuing on from my earlier post Destination Wedding and Honeymoon Hotspot – Riviera Maya, Mexico, I’m back today to share the scoop on my favorite spas.

As the Globetrotting Groom points out, even manly men need a little pampering so be sure to put a couples spa getaway on your to-do list.

On our recent Mexico getaway, we tested out the Willow Stream Spa at Fairmont Mayakoba and The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya. Both left us feeling nurtured and relaxed. Plus, they both featured top-notch technicians and local-inspired treatments that incorporated Mayan traditions and local herbs, oils and even Cacao for chocolate lovers.

Here’s the scoop:

The Willow Stream Spa is in a super tranquil building that has a fitness center, comfortable treatment rooms, an upstairs relaxation lounge and a sun-filled outdoor area with a vitality pool, sea-mineral soaking pool and lounge chairs (yes, this was my choice pre- and post-treatment spot – see below). The locker rooms are spacious and feature luxe toiletries, sauna and steam room, showers and a tranquil waiting area with refreshments.

We tested a bunch of treatments including Customized Deep Cleansing facials (so soothing I almost fell asleep), Sports Massage (the GTG loves his massages) and a Body Quench (perfect for hydrating my dry winter skin and hair). We splurged on a two-hour Yucatan Healing Retreat (for couples) that took place in our own spa suite with private balcony and soaking tub. This started with a foot bath followed by a choice of sea and sand body scrubs, body mask, bath in the soaking tub and side-by-side massages.

If there was more time, I would have tried the Cha Chac Rain Ritual, Papaya Body Illumination and Hip Honeymooners (couples treatment featuring rose petals, rose oil and rosehip oil).

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya serves up pampering in chic yet earthy surrounds (think bamboo, stone, and mosaic tilework) as Mayan philosophy meets Asian-rooted healing rituals. The outdoor garden patio and Zen relaxation room are a great choice for pre- or post-treatment relaxation. The his and hers locker rooms feature “walk through” experience areas with a bubbling vitality pool with underwater recliners (my kind of relaxation – see them at the far end below), experience showers, artfully displayed crushed ice and an amazing mosaic tiled steam room (one of the largest I’ve been in with a really cool domed ceiling, dramatic lighting and steam coming out of a “fountain” – even the GTG remarked on its coolness).

(I promise, this is not me)

There are treatment rooms, VIP couples suites and waterfront spa palapas depending on your treatment. We tried the two-hour Mayan Tzolkin Couples Ritual, one of their signature experiences. It began in the medicinal garden where we hand-picked our herbs, which were later ground up and used in our body treatments. From there we entered an enormous treatment room where we were welcomed by a foot bath. Following a full body scrub and outdoor shower, it concluded with a relaxing massage. The whole treatment was very private and luxurious and we loved it!

Next time, I’d like to try one of the Aqua Experiences – one where you let the mud sink in as you relax in a warm throne-style chair or the other where you float in the Watsu Pool.

Too bad all the relaxation seems to vanish by the time you’re back at JFK…

Have a great weekend!!!
