Eleuthera, the Best Kept Secret in the Caribbean!

Globetrotting Cindy says its better in the Bahamas!  Check out her report…

If you’re looking for an off the beatin’ track honeymoon destination with amazing beaches and a rustic feel, look no further than the “out” island of Eleuthera.  Everyone knows the Bahamas but few have visited the less developed “out” islands that are so “in” these days!

Located off the southeast coast of Florida, Eleuthera is more secluded and private than the other Bahamian destinations with emerald green waters, pink sand beaches, colonial villages, pineapple plantations, green rolling hills and isolated coves and dramatic cliffs.  Taxis are extremely expensive on the island so get a rental car (starting at $80 per day) and explore the many attractions and secluded beaches.

I was lucky enough to sample the two best honeymoon hotspots on Eluthera last month and both did not disappoint.  And, if you’re thinking destination wedding, both properties offer customized weddings and for the ultimate beach wedding, you can rent out the entire property!  Here’s the scoop.

The Cove is a luxurious haven offering 26 newly remodeled garden and beachfront rooms and deluxe suites (think urban chic meets island charm) with spectacular sunrise and sunset views.  You’ll find preloaded iPods, 600-count bed linens, free bikes and friendly staff who will arrange off-site scuba diving, surfing, island tours, bone and reef fishing, cave trips and day trips to the home of the rich and famous, Harbour Island.  You’ll enjoy an “electronic–free” getaway with no televisions or phones but WiFi is available on the beach if you must stay in touch. The Cove’s restaurant, one of the best on the island offers fine dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Insider Secret: If you’re looking to splurge, book the Point House suite, with floor-to-ceiling windows, water on three sides and a wrap-around patio offering the best observation deck on the island.

Rates start at $235/night for a garden room.

Pineapple Fields is a 32-unit boutique resort featuring oversized one and two-bedroom cottage-style condos tucked into acres of lush tropical landscape.  All the units are steps from the most spectacular beach in Eleuthera and include front and back verandahs, full size kitchens, cable TVs with DVD players, CD players, in-room safes, telephones, high-speed internet and washer/dryers.  Forty’s Sports _ Rental Shop offers everything from beach chairs, snorkeling equipment, bikes, kayaks and boogie boards and they can arrange deep sea and bone fishing, as well as water skiing, knee boarding and banana boat rides.

Insider Secret: Well, no longer a secret, Tippy’s Restaurant has become an island icon and the hottest restaurant in all of The Bahamas (think fresh seafood, beach views and live music in season). This no frills restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and they can arrange weddings right on the beach.

Rates start at $200/night for a 1-bedroom unit.
